Designing poultry sheds for a biosecurity-first era

Biosecurity is often treated as a management checklist: visitor logs, entry signs, cleaning procedures, water records, staff training and farm-specific plans. All of that matters. But on a poultry farm, the physical site layout can either make those routines easy to follow or make them harder every day.

That is why biosecurity should be part of the poultry shed design conversation from the start.

Current avian influenza updates have made this especially relevant for Australian poultry projects. The Australian Government’s bird flu page, last updated on 6 July 2026, notes the risk associated with H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b. Farm Biosecurity’s chicken and egg pages also state that H5 bird flu was detected in wild birds in Australia for the first time in June 2026.

Biosecurity starts before the shed

A biosecurity-ready poultry shed does not begin with wall framing or structural detailing. It begins with the site plan.

Before the shed footprint is locked in, the project team should understand how people, vehicles, deliveries, birds, litter, feed, eggs, waste and service equipment will move through the property. The best shed design can be undermined if the site layout forces unnecessary crossings between visitor areas and production areas.

Where possible, a farm should have one clear preferred entry point. That entry should be easy to identify, signed and connected to a logical arrival sequence: visitor parking, office or sign-in point, entry conditions and controlled access to production areas. Farm Biosecurity’s guidance on people, vehicles and equipment recommends limiting entry points, directing visitors to designated parking, using signage and keeping visitor records.

For a poultry shed project, those are design issues as much as management issues. If parking is placed too close to production sheds, if the office is awkward to find, or if delivery vehicles need to pass through sensitive areas, daily biosecurity routines become harder to enforce.

Movement paths matter

Good biosecurity design is partly about separating movement streams.

In plain terms, clean and dirty movement means thinking about where risk may be introduced, where it may spread and how to avoid casual crossover. A farm may need separate or clearly controlled paths for staff, visitors, feed trucks, egg collection, litter handling, dead bird removal, waste, maintenance equipment and emergency access.

These paths do not always need to be complicated. Often, the goal is simply to make the preferred route obvious. A visitor should know where to stop. A delivery driver should know where to go. A farm worker should not have to cross a visitor parking zone to enter a shed. A waste or litter movement route should not casually overlap with clean operational areas.

The design brief should also account for different poultry operations. A broiler shed, breeder facility, layer shed, rearing facility or free-range egg operation may have different traffic patterns, service needs and restricted areas. Multiple shed variants on the same project can add another layer of complexity, which is where coordinated design documentation becomes valuable.

Wash-down and vehicle hygiene need space

Wash-down is easy to mention in a biosecurity plan and easy to under-design in a site plan.

Farm Biosecurity advises that people, vehicles and equipment can carry diseases, pests and weeds. Its vehicle hygiene guidance includes locating wash-down facilities away from livestock and crops, collecting wastewater, directing runoff away from production areas and waterways, and keeping cleaning records.

From a design perspective, that means wash-down areas need deliberate space. They should not be an afterthought squeezed into a leftover corner of the site. The layout should consider vehicle turning, practical access, drainage direction, separation from sheds, record-keeping points and how vehicles move after cleaning.

The design team should avoid making assumptions here. Wash-down needs can vary depending on the farm, vehicle types, soil conditions, access roads, local approvals and operational procedures. The important point is to identify the requirement early enough that civil, structural, building and farm management considerations can be coordinated.

Water is a biosecurity design item

Water systems are often discussed as a services or operations item, but they also belong in the biosecurity design conversation.

Farm Biosecurity’s poultry industry pages point to the National Water Biosecurity Manual for Poultry Production and note that contaminated water can contribute to disease outbreak risk. The Australian Chicken Meat Federation also lists water sanitation records among its biosecurity resources.

For shed design and documentation, the practical question is: can the water system be inspected, treated, monitored and maintained in the real world?

That may affect access to tanks, treatment equipment, dosing systems, filters, sampling points, service zones and plant areas. Drawings should leave room for the people who will operate and maintain these systems. A water treatment area that is technically shown on a plan but difficult to access is not a great outcome for the farm.

Documentation helps the farm operate the design

Biosecurity is easier to manage when the farm has clear drawings that match how the site actually works.

Farm Biosecurity’s Action Planner encourages producers to use a property map to locate biosecurity zones and checkpoints, including signs, parking areas, delivery points, wash-down areas, storage facilities and internal tracks.

That is closely aligned with good project documentation. A useful poultry shed drawing set should not only show the shed. It should help communicate access, restricted zones, service routes, future expansion, wash-down locations, visitor parking, delivery areas and operational boundaries.

This is where Revit and coordinated BIM-style documentation can be useful on agricultural shed projects. For farms with multiple shed variants, staged construction or future expansion plans, a coordinated model and drawing set can reduce confusion between the design brief, structural detailing, construction documentation and operational planning.

Design intake questions

Before design starts, it is worth asking practical questions such as:

  • Is this a broiler, breeder, layer, rearing or other poultry facility?
  • What shed variants are required?
  • Where will visitors arrive, park and sign in?
  • Where will deliveries occur?
  • What vehicles need to enter production areas?
  • Where will wash-down occur?
  • What water sources, storage and treatment systems are involved?
  • What areas need restricted access?
  • How will clean and dirty movement paths be separated or controlled?
  • How will the design support future extensions or staged construction?

These questions do not replace a farm biosecurity plan, but they help ensure the design does not work against it.

A poultry shed project is a chance to make biosecurity easier to practise every day.

Good design cannot prevent every risk, and it should not be presented as a substitute for farm management, veterinary advice, accreditation requirements or government guidance. But thoughtful site planning can support better routines: clearer access control, better movement paths, workable wash-down locations, protected water systems and documentation that helps everyone understand the farm layout.
